One of the most frequent questions we are asked is pertaining to carpets that get waves and need to be rest retched.There are a few different reasons that this happens.

The first and most obvious is improper installation. It is the installers obligation to understand the proper techniques for stretching carpets. Sometimes the installers do not adhere to stretching guidelines and as a result, over time, the carpet will buckle. In some cases the carpet is not allowed proper time to acclimate, especially in the winter. When carpet is cold it is stiff and the backing will not be pliable for stretching. We always ask customers to turn up the heat to allow the carpet backing to relax. This further helps the stretching process.

There is also the possibility  of customer error, though usually unlikely, such as sliding furniture. Even with furniture sliding disks, it is possible to draw bubbles by sliding heavy furniture back and forth. When cleaning and rearranging it is always advisable to lift furniture rather then sliding and pushing.

Over cleaning is another bugaboo to carpet care. Everyone loves a clean home, but it is unnecessary to have your carpet shampooed or steam cleaned excessively. Especially if it is new. We always recommend with new carpets, the “get a stain, clean a stain” motto. (we will discuss cleaning techniques in next months update). When you do have them cleaned always have them cleaned by a professional, with a proper truck mounted machine. The rented or vacuumed style ones do not provide enough suction to properly remove the excess water. This can lead to mold, mildew, or further carpet damage. 

The final and most unlikely reason behind carpet bubbles is defective carpet. If the problem is persistent your carpet professional can usually diagnose this and then forward it to the manufacturer. The manufacturer will then send an inspector to your home. Again, this is highly unlikely in most cases and must be determined by a professional.

Most companies will warranty their installation for at least one year, so if you have a problem it always pays to call the original installers.
